Gift Aid and how it works
What is Gift Aid?
If you are a UK tax payer then Gift Aid is a great way for you to increase the value of tour donations to our charity.
How does it work?
If you give £10 to our charity then we just get £10. But if you Gift Aid it then we receive £1.25 which is a huge help to us. We claim the Gift Aid from the HMRC so you don't pay any more but we receive an extra 25%.
Can you use Gift Aid?
Anyone can use Gift Aid provided they have paid enough tax to cover the amount reclaimed by us in the current financial year. Income tax or capital gains tax qualify but VAT and Council Tax do not.
If you are a higher rate tax payer then you get extra tax relief
As a higher rate of tax payer you can claim back the difference between the higher rates of tax at 40 [or 50 per cent] and the basic rate of tax at 20 per cent on the total value of your gross donation. HMRC give this example on their website
A 40 per cent higher rate taxpayer donates £100 to charity. The charity makes a repayment claim for £25 (boosting the donation to £125). The higher rate taxpayer can also claim back £25. This is the difference between the higher rate of tax at 40 per cent and the basic rate of tax at 20 per cent on the total value of his donation i.e. 20 per cent of £125.
